KUCHING: Three local male drivers aged between 24 and 65 were detained after their breathalyser tests using the SD2+ device showed alcohol levels exceeding 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.

All suspects were brought to Kuching District Police Headquarters for further investigation.

Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said they are being investigated under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit.

He added if convicted, offenders face imprisonment of up to two years, a fine between RM10,000 and RM30,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least two years. The operation also inspected 84 individuals and 76 vehicles, including 23 cars, 30 motorcycles, 11 four-wheel drives, and 12 MPVs. A total of 27 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.

Alexson warned that stressed that such operations will continue from time to time to reduce road accidents caused by drunk driving.

“I urge all road users not to drive under the influence of alcohol as it not only endangers other road users but also puts their own lives at risk,” he said.

Alexson said the special operation targeting drink-driving along Jalan Tabuan began at 11.00 p.m. on August 21 and ended at 3.00 a.m. today.

The operation, involving two senior officers and 11 personnel, was aimed at curbing drunk driving to ensure the safety of all road users.
