KUCHING: Chairman of the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak, Michael Kong has urged greater participation in the MYPSV programme, a government-funded initiative aimed at training new bus drivers in the state.
Speaking after a meeting with the Sarawak Bus Transport Companies Association (SBTCA) and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak, Kong highlighted that although the programme was allocated for 300 participants, only 211 qualified candidates had been put forward by SBTCA.
These candidates successfully completed their training and obtained their PSV licences, but the shortfall underscores the need for more applicants to take advantage of this opportunity.
“The Ministry of Transport, together with JPJ Sarawak and LPKP Sarawak, has a structured plan in place, not only to train these drivers but also to ensure they have real employment opportunities upon completing their training,” Kong said.
With the launch of BAS.MY Kuching, he noted that new job placements are being created to allow trained drivers to contribute effectively to Sarawak’s growing public transport network.
He emphasized that revitalizing the public transport sector is a key priority, making it both a viable career path and an essential service for the public.
“As we continue rolling out initiatives like BAS.MY Kuching, we remain open to engagement with industry players and are committed to delivering the best possible outcomes for both transport operators and the commuting public,” Kong added.
