KUCHING: Special Assistant to Member of Parliament (MP) for Stampin Michael Kong called on the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to take immediate action to address ongoing safety and infrastructure issues at Lorong Sherip Masahor 3.
Kong said he received numerous complaints from residents about indiscriminate parking, speeding vehicles, and poor drainage conditions in the area.
After visiting the site himself, he confirmed that these concerns were valid and required urgent intervention.
“One of the major issues is the indiscriminate parking of vehicles along the street throughout the day.
“This, combined with speeding vehicles, has raised serious safety concerns among residents.
“The narrow road space has already led to several near-collisions, and without proper intervention, the risk of accidents will only increase,” Kong said in a statement.
To mitigate the danger, residents have proposed the installation of speed bumps to slow down traffic and improve road safety.
Another suggested measure is the installation of blind spot mirrors to assist residents in safely exiting the apartment area.
However, Kong pointed out that overgrown trees with branches extending into overhead cables could obstruct visibility for the proposed mirrors.
He urged the relevant authorities to trim or remove these trees to ensure safety.
Kong highlighted the poor condition of the main drainage system, which has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes due to stagnant water.
“The drainage system is in a dilapidated state, and this poses a serious health hazard.
MBKS must take immediate action to repair and upgrade it,” he said.
Despite these concerns being raised with MBKS, Kong said no action has been taken so far.
He stressed that this inaction was unacceptable as it involved real safety issues affecting residents’ daily lives.
“I strongly urge MBKS to act immediately before any unfortunate incident occurs. Public safety and well-being must always be the top priority,” he added.
