
KUCHING: Kuching police have confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old local man involved in an attempted robbery incident that went viral on social media today.
Kuching police chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the video showed members of the public apprehending the suspect near a bank in Tabuan Tranquility after he allegedly attempted to commit a robbery.
He said the suspect has admitted to being involved in the case during initial questioning. “A background check revealed the suspect has one previous criminal record. A preliminary urine test also showed he was positive for drugs,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of up to 14 years, and may also include a fine or whipping.
ACP Alexson urged the public to come forward with any additional information related to the case by contacting Investigating Officer Insp Tan Chiang Fook at 018-2628805.
He also encouraged the community to report any suspicious activity in the area by calling the Kuching District Police Control Centre at 082-244444 or visiting the nearest police station.
