KUCHING: Two women were caught in connection with the theft of Telekom Malaysia (TM) cables following a police patrol operation in Taman Emas early Saturday morning.
Samarahan District Police Chief Supt Damataries Lautin said the incident occurred around 2am on October 12 at Taman Emas, when a police team from the Kota Samarahan Crime Prevention Patrol Unit noticed several suspicious individuals by the roadside.
“When the suspects realised the presence of police, they fled the scene. A subsequent inspection of the vehicles they used led to the arrest of one woman and the discovery of cable-cutting tools and TM cables at the back of a lorry,” he said in a statement today.
Damataries said the suspect, identified as 27-year-old female was detained at the scene, while another woman, 34-year-old, was later arrested following police investigation.
A third suspect had been identified and remains at large and is being tracked down.
Among the items seized were a Daihatsu lorry, a Proton Saga car, two sets of cable-cutting tools, two mobile phones, and 10 pieces of cut black cables believed to belong to TM.
Damataries said initial urine screening found one of the suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
“Both suspects have been remanded for four days to assist in investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft,” she said, adding that Telekom Malaysia will also be called in to verify and identify the recovered items.
Investigations are ongoing.
