KUCHING: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has lodged a police report against Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd and KUTS over the water disruption that occurred from September 22 to 23, 2025, affecting thousands of residents and businesses.
“The disruption was caused by damage to a 600mm ductile iron pipe at Jalan Canna by Sarawak Metro’s contractor during piling works for the KUTS Blue Line,” Chong said. “As a result, many households were left without water for up to 24 hours, while hawker stalls and other businesses were forced to shut down temporarily.”
Chong stressed that such incidents could have been avoided with proper planning and on-site surveys, suggesting there may have been negligence in the project’s design and planning stages.
Citing Sections 425 and 427 of the Penal Code, he pointed out that the act could fall under “mischief,” which carries penalties of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both if the damage exceeds RM25.
“Although the damaged pipe belongs to Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd, another state agency, Sarawak Metro and KUTS cannot hide behind the fact that they are under the same government. Public agencies must be accountable for their actions,” he said.
He added that Sarawak Water’s revenue comes from the people and its services directly impact the public, stressing the need for greater accountability in the implementation of the KUTS project.
