KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap defended Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) as the state’s sole gas aggregator, saying it reflects Sarawak’s constitutional rights and the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
He said recent remarks by Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim questioning Petros disregarded Sarawak’s historical and legal position.
“Oil and gas within Sarawak’s boundaries are part of the state’s natural wealth under the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958. Petros ensures Sarawakians are no longer short-changed,” he said.
Yap rejected claims that Petros would weaken Petronas, stressing that Petronas remains a global giant while Petros ensures transparency and fairer benefits for Sarawakians.
He also said Sarawak’s demand for a larger revenue share, including its RM10 billion claim, was about correcting historical imbalances, not destabilising the Federation. “Petros is about dignity, fairness and development for Sarawak while continuing to contribute to national prosperity,” he added.
