KUCHING: The public park at Taman Phoenix has been left in a state of disrepair and urgently needs the attention of the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), says Michael Kong, Special Assistant to Chong Chieng Jen.
Kong, who recently visited the area, expressed shock at the poor condition of the park. He described the jogging track as almost unusable due to overgrown grass, and highlighted that much of the playground equipment and outdoor fitness machines were either damaged or poorly maintained.
“What’s most worrying is the condition of the rubber safety mats. They’re covered in moss, dangerously slippery, and in many areas, they’re peeling off completely,” Kong said. “This creates serious safety hazards, especially for young children and the elderly.”
He stressed that public parks play an important role in promoting healthy lifestyles and building stronger communities.
“Parks are vital public spaces where people come together to exercise, relax, and connect and with growing awareness of mental and physical wellness, authorities like MPP need to take their maintenance duties seriously,” said Kong.
Kong called on MPP to act immediately by clearing and resurfacing the jogging track, repairing and maintaining the fitness and playground equipment, and replacing the unsafe rubber mats.
“The current state of the park sends the wrong message to residents. It gives the impression that their well-being doesn’t matter. MPP must show that it cares by restoring the park to a safe and usable condition for everyone,” he said.
