KUCHING: A local man was arrested yesterday for drug trafficking under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the 24-year-old suspect was caught with a large quantity of cannabis weighing 7,450 grams, valued at over RM23,095.

The arrest was made at a commercial centre along Jalan Green at about 1.10 am.

According to Alexson, the drugs were believed to be intended for distribution. The suspect tested negative for drug use and has no prior criminal record related to drug offences.

He is currently under a five-day remand until July 7 to facilitate further investigation.

In addition to the drugs, police also seized a Kia Picanto believed to be linked to the drug activities. The vehicle was confiscated under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988.

Alexson urged members of the public to continue providing information on drug distribution and abuse in their surroundings by reporting to the nearest police station.

This cooperation is vital in helping us combat and eradicate the drug menace together.
