KUCHING: Immediate action is needed to address the overgrown vegetation monsoon drain at Lorong Stampin Barat 4A1, which has been left uncleared for years, posing a serious flood risk to nearby residents.
Michael Kong, Special assistant to MP Stampin, Chong Chieng Jen, raised the alarm following a recent visit to the area, where he found vegetation growing thickly along and within the monsoon drain, severely obstructing the flow of stormwater.
“I was alarmed to see the extent of vegetation in the drain. This kind of neglect is deeply concerning, especially when these drains are crucial in preventing flash floods in residential neighbourhoods,” he said.
Kong said residents expressed their frustration during his visit, saying the drain had never been properly cleared or maintained for as long as they could remember. The unchecked growth of plants, he said, has further blocked water flow and increased the risk of overflow during heavy rainfall.
“This is unacceptable. Monsoon drains are essential public infrastructure, and it is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to ensure they are regularly maintained and remain functional. A clogged or neglected drain poses a serious flood risk due to unpredictable weather these days,” he stressed.
Kong called on the relevant maintenance departments to act without further delay, saying the drain must be cleared immediately to allow proper discharge of stormwater and to protect the safety and property of residents in the area.
He said the authority should not neglect public infrastructure.
