KUCHING: The rollout of Kuching’s 10th and final route under the Bas.My Kuching initiative was officially completed today with the launch of the Saujana–SMK Matang Jaya route.
LPKP Sarawak Chairman Michael Kong called it a milestone that signifies the fulfilment of a key commitment and also highlights a broader effort to enhance urban mobility in Kuching.
“With all ten SBST Kuching routes now operational, we are taking a significant step forward in making public transport a viable and practical option for more Sarawakians,” he said.
Kong added that the next phase of the initiative will focus on increasing public awareness and closely tracking usage patterns.
“We’ve received many public requests to expand our services to other areas, particularly underserved communities. These requests are being seriously considered,” he assured.
However, he noted that routes with persistently low ridership may be reassessed to ensure resources are used effectively as they wanted to prioritise areas with higher demand so that the limited budget allocated for this project delivers the greatest impact.
In conjunction with the launch, Kong visited the new temporary bus hub at the Open Air Market, which now serves as the departure point for all ten routes following the closure of the Saujana Bus Terminal. The closure is in line with the progress of the Kuching Urban Transportation System project.
“We observed that relocating the terminal has led to increased traffic congestion in the city centre. We will work closely with DBKU to find a more suitable and less disruptive location for our bus operations,” he said.
Kong stated that the agency’s commitment to building a more reliable and efficient public transport network in Kuching and Sarawak, and expressed appreciation for the continued support of the public.
“We encourage everyone to make full use of the Bas.My Kuching service. Your support is essential in helping us shape a more connected and accessible city for all,” he said.
