MPP Chairman, Tan Kai says campaign ongoing against strays

TAN Kai calls to dog owners to vaccine their pet.

KUCHING: An average of 100 to 120 stray dogs are caught each month as part of efforts to clean the streets and control the spread of rabies among strays.

When contacted by Utusan Sarawak, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Chairman Cr Tan Kai said there are still cases of rabies among animals, and unfortunately, one human case has been reported this year.

He reminded the public to be civic-minded and avoid dumping puppies and urged pet owners to spay their female dogs. He pointed out that some people abandon their dogs when they become old or sick, which contributes to the stray population.

Tan Kai said the Council has been working closely with the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) to combat the disease.

This week, he stated that the Council is giving a free dog licensing, anti-rabies vaccination and microchipping programme on Saturday, June 28, at the parking lot of the Kota Sentosa Basketball Court.

“Organised in collaboration with DVSS and supported by the Kota Sentosa Basketball Club, the programme aims to control the spread of rabies and promote responsible pet ownership. Dog owners in Padawan are encouraged to bring their pets for free vaccination, microchipping, and licensing services, ” said Tan Kai.

Additionally, he said MPP is providing a RM150 neutering subsidy for the first 50 dogs that are vaccinated, licensed, and interested can registered with the Council on the day
