KUCHING: Leon Jimat Donald has reaffirmed his commitment to Sarawak’s autonomy in a press statement following his attendance at the 16th Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Convention.
Leon was in DAP for 13 years and was formerly the DAP Vice Chairman before quitting in January 2022. He ran as a DAP candidate in Simanggang in the past three state elections but lost all the three elections.
When contacted by Utusan Sarawak, Leon said he decided to join as an ordinary member in September, after being invited by PBB in Balai Ringin who he said claimed that he was partyless for too long.
He reaffirmed his commitment to PBB and GPS: “I do not join PBB as a passive observer as I join as an advocate, a champion, and a fighter for Sarawak’s cause.”
Leon committed to bringing fresh leadership, bold ideas, and determination to ensure Sarawak’s autonomy and dignity remain at the forefront of Malaysia’s political agenda.
Describing the PBB Convention, attended by 3,200 delegates, as not only a political gathering but also a powerful demonstration of solidarity, strength, and commitment to Sarawak’s future, he said the energy throughout the convention was electrifying.
He recalled the warmth and enthusiasm with which he was welcomed by members. “The message was clear: PBB remains the backbone of Sarawak, and GPS is the only coalition that truly puts Sarawak first.”
Donald reiterated his reasons for aligning himself with PBB and GPS, emphasizing that Sarawak’s future must be determined by Sarawakians, free from outside control.
“GPS is the only coalition that operates free from Malayan political control, enabling Sarawak to chart its own course. I stand with those who are steadfast in defending our rights—not out of convenience, but out of conviction,” he stated.
Addressing critics of his political stance, he affirmed, “Politics must never be a pursuit of personal ambition but a duty to serve, protect, and advance the interests of the people. My decision is not about party allegiance—it is about principles, about securing Sarawak’s autonomy, prosperity, and dignity.”
He emphasised the importance of Sarawak securing true autonomy, stating, “We contribute billions to the national economy, yet we do not receive a fair and equitable share of our own resources. This status quo is unacceptable. We will not beg for our rights—we will demand them.”
Leon believes in Sarawak’s critical role in shaping Malaysia’s future, asserting, “A stronger Sarawak means a stronger Malaysia—but only if we are recognised as the equal partner we were always meant to be.”
He expressed confidence that GPS is the only coalition genuinely upholding Sarawak’s interests, free from outside interference.
Leon was the son of former Sri Aman MP, the late Jimmy Donald and he was formerly Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) before joining DAP.
