KUCHING: George Lam, Special Assistant to Dr Kelvin Yii, has called on the Kuching South City Council to urgently repair damaged streetlights along Padungan Old Street, saying many of the lights have deteriorated and several lamp covers are hanging loosely.
“I noticed during my visit today that some lamp covers are dangling in mid-air. This is dangerous for pedestrians and road users if they were to fall,” he said.
Lam added that Padungan Old Street sits in the heart of Kuching and is a busy area used by locals and visitors. He warned that the loose lamp covers not only spoil the appearance of the city but could become a serious safety hazard if left unattended.
“If tourists walk along Padungan and see these unsightly, hanging lamp covers, it will leave a negative impression of Kuching as a tourist destination,” he said.
He confirmed that an official complaint has been lodged with the Council and expressed hope that MBKS will act quickly to secure the loose lamp covers and replace any non-functioning bulbs so the area can once again be properly lit at night.
“The image of Kuching is something we build together. If the public encounters municipal issues that remain unresolved, they are welcome to contact us in the DAP. We will not hesitate to speak up and act on behalf of the people,” Lam added.
