Kelvin Yii welcomes expansion of MyKasih programme to support small retailers

MP Kuching, Dr Kelvin Yii.

KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said the Ministry of Finance is considering to expand the MyKasih merchant partnership initiative, which aims to include more small and medium retailers under the SARA cash assistance programme.

He said Deputy Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan informed Parliament that the government supports the move and is looking into widening SARA’s scope to make it easier for recipients to spend their aid at nearby shops while boosting local economic growth.

As of November 3, 2025, there are over 8,700 participating merchants, including 2,500 small retailers, compared to only about 700 stores in 2024. The ministry also plans to extend SARA coverage beyond basic food items to include school supplies and hygiene products.

Dr Yii urged the government to speed up the approval process for small retailers and grocery shops, noting that many have complained about delays and technical issues such as shortages of point-of-sale equipment. He said addressing these problems would help ensure the programme benefits more communities and supports small businesses.
