Street racing crackdown in Kuching with 11 motorcycles seized, over 60 summonses issued

KUCHING: In an effort to curb illegal racing in the city, Kuching District Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said a total of 11 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for having modifications that deviated from their original factory structure and were brought in for further inspection in an operation during the weekend. 

“During the operation, 40 individuals and 34 motorcycles were inspected. A total of 65 traffic summonses were issued for various road offences,” he said.

Police, he said wanted to stop the danger of street racing  this a major joint operation in several parts of Kuching, including Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakob, Jalan Astana, and the Masja area.

The operation was carried out between 10.00 pm on July 19 and 6.00 am on July 20, involved the Sarawak Contingent Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT IPK Sarawak), Kuching District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (IPD Kuching), and enforcement officers from the Department of Environment (DOE).

Alexson disclosed that DOE officers also compounded six motorcyclists for using modified exhaust systems that exceeded the permissible noise limits.

In total, four senior police officers and 44 personnel, along with one officer and four personnel from the DOE, took part in the operation, which focused on deterring reckless driving and illegal vehicle modifications.

He stressed that such operations will continue from time to time to ensure road users comply with traffic laws and refrain from engaging in dangerous activities like street racing or illegal vehicle modifications.

He urged all road users to drive responsibly, stay alert, and avoid actions that endanger themselves and others. Reckless behaviour can cost lives.
