KUCHING: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has reiterated that public service should transcend constituency boundaries, following the successful completion of upgrade works at the Malihah Methodist Church.

Although the church is located outside the Stampin parliamentary constituency, Chong said his office was approached by church elders last year regarding urgent repair needs.

Recognising the importance of institutions that serve the community, especially those involving children’s safety and welfare, his office took steps to assist the church in applying for federal funding.

“We firmly believe that our duty to serve extends beyond geographic lines. The safety of our children and the proper functioning of community institutions must always be our priority,” Chong said.

Thanks to the joint efforts of his office and the church committee, Malihah Methodist Church received an allocation of RM250,000 from the Federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government on 3 December 2024.

The funds were used to install a new CCTV system, maintain air-conditioning units, extend the roofing, and expand the floor area for kindergarten use.

Chong visited the church again recently to inspect the completed works. He expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that the upgrades have improved safety, comfort and usability for both churchgoers and the children attending kindergarten classes there.

He also commended the church committee for their efficiency and dedication in ensuring the timely and effective use of the federal grant.

“This is a shining example of what can be achieved when communities, government, and elected representatives work hand in hand. We will continue to support initiatives like this, as we believe in building a safer, stronger, and more compassionate society together,” Chong added.

The site visit was also accompanied by Chong’s special assistant, Michael Kong Feng Nian, who had been closely following the progress of the project.
