PERKESO amnesty urged amid tragic factory death in Kuching

KUCHING: Employers across the country, including those in Sarawak, are strongly urged to take full advantage of the Social Security Organisation’s (PERKESO) amnesty programme, which runs until May 31.

The initiative allows employers to settle overdue contributions without incurring penalties, compounds, or late charges.

The call comes in the wake of a tragic workplace accident involving 70-year-old factory worker Chung Jee Fatt, who died on March 15 after being impaled by a forklift blade at a factory in the Pending Industrial Estate.

The incident occurred around 4.00 PM, when Chung was found trapped between a stack of pallets with the blade piercing the left side of his chest.

Following the tragedy, PERKESO’s Skuad Prihatin verified that Chung was a registered contributor under Act 4 of the Employees’ Social Security Act (AKSP), employed as a forklift driver at a local factory in Kuching.

In a show of support, MP for Bandar Kuching Dr Kelvin Yii, together with Sarawak PERKESO Director Tan Phang Chia, visited the late worker’s widow, Nikun Anak Gulep, to deliver condolences and aid. A PERKESO Prihatin Box containing food essentials and a Funeral Benefit of RM3,000 was handed over during the visit.

The widow was also presented with documentation for the PERKESO Survivors’ Pension, which she is entitled to receive for life.

“This case underscores the vital importance of PERKESO contributions in ensuring workers and their families are protected in times of crisis.

“Employers must fulfil their obligations under the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969. This is not just a matter of compliance, it’s about protecting lives and livelihoods,” said Dr Yii.

Employees are reminded that they have the right to verify whether their employers are making the necessary PERKESO contributions.

Under normal circumstances, failure to do so could result in legal action, compounds, and late payment interest. However, the ongoing PERKESO Amnesty Month offers a valuable opportunity for employers to come forward without facing such penalties.

“Let us honour the late Mr Chung by committing to safer workplaces and ensuring that every worker receives the social protection they deserve,” Dr Yii added.
