Sarawak monitors air quality amid rising API readings

Utusan Sarawak 2 days ago

DESPITE the clear weather, haze is likely to make a comeback should burning intensify.

KUCHING: Sarawak’s air quality remains generally within the ‘Good’ to ‘Moderate’ range despite a noticeable rise in Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, according to the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak.

As of July 21, no locations across the state have recorded API levels in the ‘Unhealthy’ category.

However, the NREB noted that API readings have shown an upward trend since July 19. The board has warned that haze conditions could develop if transboundary biomass burning in neighbouring Kalimantan intensifies.

The southwest monsoon, which brings steady winds from the southwest, may further contribute to the movement of smoke and particulate matter from Kalimantan into Sarawak’s airspace.

In Kuching, air quality has remained in the moderate range, though there has been a gradual rise in API levels. Local authorities are urging residents to monitor conditions closely and reduce outdoor activities, especially during periods of visible haze or higher API readings. The public is also reminded to avoid open burning, particularly in residential and agricultural zones.

In Sibu, the situation mirrors that of Kuching, with moderate air quality observed and API readings inching upward.

Authorities in the central region are maintaining surveillance and advising the community to remain cautious, especially individuals with respiratory conditions, young children, and the elderly.

Miri and Bintulu have also reported moderate air quality, with occasional hazy conditions visible in the early morning.

Both divisions, which are closer to Kalimantan, are considered more susceptible to transboundary haze during this southwest monsoon period.

The NREB continues to monitor both locations closely for any significant changes in air quality.

Other divisions, such as Sri Aman, Kapit, and Limbang, are also experiencing similar conditions. While readings remain within acceptable limits, enforcement teams are on alert for any signs of open burning or changes in visibility that could indicate deteriorating air quality.

The NREB has deployed five air quality monitoring stations throughout Sarawak and is coordinating efforts with other relevant agencies to ensure swift response should conditions worsen.

The public is encouraged to check real-time API updates through the MyIPU application or by visiting the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) website.

NREB reported that while there are no immediate health concerns, residents are advised to take precautionary steps, especially if haze begins to affect visibility or causes breathing discomfort and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, staying hydrated, and keeping windows closed during hazy periods are recommended safety measures.
