THE two children with No K in IC are overjoyed when state Assemblywoman, Violet Yong assists them to apply for it successfully.
KUCHING: Two children born in Sarawak who previously did not have the ‘K’ indicator on their MyKad have now successfully obtained it, marking a significant recognition of their Sarawakian identity.
Pending State Assemblywoman Violet Yong, who accompanied the two applicants to the National Registration Department last week, said the successful update holds deep significance for the children.
“They are now officially recognised as Sarawakians. This acknowledgment is not just symbolic—it opens the door for them to enjoy the rights and privileges that come with being Sarawakian,” she said.
Yong highlighted that many stateless children, even after being granted Malaysian citizenship under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution, continued to face difficulties due to the absence of the ‘K’ indicator on their identity cards.
“Without the ‘K’ code, they were effectively denied their Sarawakian identity. It affected their right to reside, study, and work in Sarawak long-term,” she explained.
Yong said she had consistently raised this issue in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, urging the state government to review the policy that excluded the ‘K’ indicator from the MyKad of children granted citizenship through Article 15A.
“I’m pleased that this matter has finally been addressed and resolved. It’s a heartening development, especially for children adopted by Sarawakian parents and registered as Malaysian citizens, who can now apply for the ‘K’ code,” she said.
“This is a meaningful step forward in affirming their rightful place as Sarawakians.”
