KUCHING: Special Assistant to MP Stampin, Michael Kong has called on the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to tighten supervision of its contractors and ensure proper disposal of rubbish cleared from drains.
He highlighted a recent incident at Hui Sing Commercial Centre where MBKS contractors cleaned rubbish from the drains but left it piled on the roadside grass patch instead of disposing of it properly.
“This reflects a half-hearted approach to the job. If strong winds or heavy rain occur, the rubbish will be washed back into the drains, causing blockages and rendering the exercise pointless,” he said.
Kong said his concerns were confirmed during a site visit, where he found that a significant amount of rubbish had already ended up back in the drains.
With the current trend of frequent heavy rainfall, Kong stressed that it is critical to keep drains free from obstructions to ensure smooth water flow. He urged MBKS to hold contractors accountable for delivering quality results rather than merely completing tasks on paper.
“Public funds are being spent on these works, and the people have every right to expect them to be done properly, not carelessly or half-heartedly,” he added.
