KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin said that while the increased allocation for Sarawak in the 2026 Federal Budget is welcome, the state deserves a permanent formula-based development framework that recognises Sarawak, Sabah and Malaya as equal partners under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
“When Malaysia was formed, it was meant to be a partnership of three regions, not just 13 states,” he said. “Development funds should be distributed fairly based on this framework to ensure balanced growth and respect for MA63.”
Yap said that although Sarawak contributes significantly to the national economy, many areas, including parts of Kota Sentosa, still struggle with old facilities, poor drainage and limited community infrastructure.
He urged that the RM6 billion allocation for Sarawak be used efficiently and transparently to benefit the people without delay or bureaucracy.
“Sarawak must continue to seek greater autonomy to manage its own funds,” he said, adding that development for Sarawak should not be seen as a favour but as a rightful obligation under the Federation.
