KUCHING: DAPSY Sarawak treasurer, Wong King Yii, has urged the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to adopt stronger and more transparent measures in addressing illegal gambling activities within its jurisdiction.
Wong noted that members of the public continue to observe signs of illegal online gambling operating openly in neighbourhoods, particularly in certain coffee shops and convenience outlets.
“MPP has an important role as the first line of defence in safeguarding community welfare. While collaboration with the police is necessary, the Council also holds the authority to act, including revoking business licences when premises are misused. This was done before, and there is no reason why similar action cannot be considered again,” he said.
He added that greater transparency would help strengthen public confidence.
“If enforcement action has been taken, MPP should share the details, such as the number of inspections, licence revocations, or closures. This will show the people that concrete steps are being taken,” he explained.
Wong also highlighted the broader importance of accountability in local governance, saying the restoration of local council elections would allow communities to directly choose their representatives.
“By restoring local democracy, councillors will be answerable to the people on issues such as safety, enforcement, and social well-being. This will ensure that local authorities truly reflect the aspirations of the community,” he said.
He reiterated that illegal gambling is not merely a nuisance but a social concern that can harm families and erode community values. “It is important for councils to rise above technical limitations and place the welfare of the people first,” Wong added.
