KUCHING: A CCTV image showing two suspects, one riding a motorcycle and the other hurling stones has shed new light on the ongoing spate of stone-throwing incidents terrorising road users along Batu Kawa.

Padawan Municipal Council Chairman, Cr Tan Kai, when contacted by Utusan Sarawak, confirmed the footage showed on the recent installed  council’s CCTV system and has since been handed over to the police for investigation.

BATU Kawa suspect caught red handed for throwing stones at passing vehicle.

“The images shows one suspect riding while the other throws rocks at passing vehicles,” he said.

On July 7, a 68-year-old man was caught red handed along Batu Kawa, found holding bricks with more rocks lined up beside him in an attempt to throw them at passing vehicles. He was later confirmed to be mentally unstable.

After his arrest, more cases cropped up dashing hopes that the threat had been contained raising concerns that more individuals could be involved.

CCTV fixed recently along Batu Kawa to catch the culprits.

Victims have reported severe damage to their vehicles with some repairs costing thousands of ringgit while one woman sustained injuries to her face and arms when a rock smashed through her windscreen earlier this month.

Padawan District Police Chief, Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi had confirmed that investigations are ongoing and called on the public to provide any relevant information.

In a bid to speed up the search for the culprits, Padawan councillor and businessman Aaron Tay has offered a RM5,000 reward to anyone with accurate information leading to an arrest.

On July 20, an elderly man was apprehended by members of the public at Central Timur after he was caught throwing a stone that shattered a car’s windscreen. It was unrelated to the stone throwing case in Batu Kawa.

With fear escalating among residents, Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has filed an emergency motion in the Dewan Rakyat, urging Parliament to address the six-month-long menace that has endangered lives and shaken public confidence in safety enforcement.
