KUCHING: Kota Sentosa State Assemblyman Wilfred Yap has called for urgent flood mitigation measures to safeguard residents of the Stampin Resettlement Scheme, during the final report meeting on the “Rancangan Tebatan Banjir di kawasan Skim Penempatan Semula Stampin, Jalan Stampin Baru, Kuching,” chaired by Datu Ahmad Dennney Ahmad Fauzi, Director of Irrigation & Drainage Sarawak.
Yap said flooding has long posed serious risks to communities, infrastructure, and the environment in the area. He said the proposed mitigation project is expected to benefit 1,503 households, comprising 9,206 residents.
The consultant’s studies recommend a comprehensive approach, including riverbank isolation, pump stations, detention ponds, and drainage improvements.
Recognising the urgency, Yap explained that the project will be implemented in two phases, with Phase 1 estimated at RM36 million and scheduled to address immediate drainage and flood issues.
Wilfred Yap urged the consultant to complete technical drawings promptly so that construction can begin no later than the first quarter of 2026.
He added that strong collaboration between state agencies is essential to ensure timely implementation.
“Flood mitigation is not only about engineering solutions but also about giving peace of mind to families who have suffered from recurring floods for far too long. Protecting our people must always be our top priority. I will continue to push for this project to move forward without delay,” he said.
