KUCHING: DAPSY Stampin Chief Soo Tien Ren has responded to Padawan Municipal Council Chairman Tan Kai’s recent remarks on the economic situation in 10th Mile, reiterating concerns over the area’s decline.
“I welcome the Chairman’s response, but the economic challenges in 10th Mile are real and felt daily by small traders and residents,” he said, citing reduced foot traffic and falling sales as key indicators.
Soo noted that while federal policies may play a role, local factors, particularly the rapid expansion of large retail chains have contributed significantly to the strain on small businesses. He urged the Council to consider the uneven playing field faced by local traders.
“Development must strike a balance between economic growth and the well-being of small businesses. We cannot afford to let our grassroots economy be sidelined,” he added.
Soo invited the Chairman to visit the area together, engage with local traders, and better understand their concerns on the ground.
“We are open to working with the Council on constructive solutions, but this must be guided by engagement, empathy, and shared responsibility,” he said.
