KUCHING: The Sarawak Iconic Businesses Recognition Night and Official Book Launch was successfully held at the Imperial Hotel, here last night, organised by Utusan Sarawak.
The momentous event celebrating the enduring legacy and achievements of Sarawak’s most inspiring homegrown enterprises.
The event was officiated by Senator Dato’ Ahmad Ibrahim, who delivered a heartfelt keynote address honouring Sarawakian entrepreneurs and their contribution to the state’s socio-economic development.
In his speech, Dato’ Ahmad expressed pride not only as a Sarawakian but also as a former banker who had worked with many of the entrepreneurs featured in the book during his years with Bank Utama and RHB Bank.
“Some of you may have been my clients. We discussed financing over kopi-o, strategised your expansion plans, or navigated the tough early years together. To now witness how far you’ve come — not only surviving but thriving — fills me with indescribable pride,” said the Senator.
He emphasised that the term “iconic” represents not just business success, but significance, impact, and legacy, likening Sarawak’s entrepreneurs to the Rejang River — persistent, life-giving, and deeply rooted in local identity.
The publication titled “Sarawak Iconic Businesses” documents the journeys of over 30 local brands — from humble beginnings to market leaders — such as Sundrop, Lee Fah Mee, Lee Onn, and Kaisu.
The book serves not only as a tribute but as a blueprint and inspiration for future generations.
Dato’ Ahmad also reiterated the government’s role in facilitating an
enabling environment for SMEs and family-owned businesses to flourish.
He stressed that the economic future of Sarawak must remain Sarawak-owned and Sarawak-led.
The evening concluded with the official launch of the book, marked by a symbolic unveiling, networking sessions, and a renewed commitment to honour Sarawak’s entrepreneurial spirit.
