KUCHING: The recent joint declaration by the Sarawak and Federal Governments officially recognizing Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) as the primary entity for natural gas sales has been described as a significant milestone in the ongoing journey toward greater autonomy for Sarawak.
Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sarawak Director of Political Education, Soo Tien Ren, welcomed the move, calling it a meaningful step in the spirit of federalism and a positive reflection of evolving state-federal relations.
“For the first time in six decades, we are witnessing a substantial return of authority to Sarawak in managing our own resources.
“This development is the result of a consistent and cooperative effort under the Unity Government, and it reflects the commitment of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to advance meaningful reform,” Soo said in a statement.
Soo said DAP has long advocated for the decentralisation of powers to ensure that local communities have a greater say in decisions that affect them. He views the recognition of PETROS as the culmination of years of advocacy for local empowerment and a reaffirmation of Sarawak’s rightful role within the Malaysian federation.
“This achievement is not the result of one party or one leader alone.
“It is the outcome of many who have worked steadily to bring about change — both at the federal and state levels. What matters now is that we build on this progress together,” he added.
Soo also noted that while the milestone is encouraging, more can be done to deepen cooperation and advance Sarawak’s development in a balanced and inclusive manner.
“We must remain focused on policies that unite rather than divide, and that lift all Malaysians regardless of background. Sarawak’s strength lies in its diversity, and it is important that we uphold this spirit in our political discourse,” he said.
“This is not the time to dwell on the past or assign blame. Instead, we should seize this.
