KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Chairman, Tan Kai has acknowledged public concern over the toilet conditions at the 3rd Mile Market, which were caused by a blockage in the floor trap and aging drainage pipes.

He explained that the DAP has coincidentally lodged a complain on Sunday. “I got a feeling they will say we came to hand over the awarding letter to the contractor due to thier complaints. This is not so. As we have already tendered out the project on May 10. And it was recently that we fixed today to give out the awarding letter, ” he said showing media the tender notice.

Tan Kai said that the drainage obstruction led to slow water flow and periodic flooding, requiring extensive repairs, including hacking and reconstruction of the drainage system.

He said the toilet facility at the 3rd Mile Market is very old and clearly overdue for an upgrade. In response, MPP has secured a BP1 project this year for a complete overhaul, and the contract for the works is being awarded today.

Under the KPKT’s Bersih, Menawan dan Wangi (BMW) toilet initiative, Tan Kai added that the upgrading works will include construction of new toilet cubicles, new tiling works, replacement of windows and doors, new ceiling installation, upgrading of sanitary fittings, installation of table top with wash hand basin, plumbing works, and installation of downlights for improved lighting.

He assured hawkers and market-goers that the matter is being handled with urgency and care and expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and emphasised that the Council remains committed to improving public amenities under its jurisdiction and delivering better, cleaner, and more comfortable facilities for the community.
