KUCHING: A Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) aircraft skidded off the runway at Kuching International Airport earlier today, leading to a temporary suspension of flight operations.

Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the police received a call at about 12.25pm from the airport auxiliary police regarding the incident.

“Upon receiving the report, a team from the Sungai Maong Police Station led by Insp Awang Ramzi Awang Junaidi was immediately dispatched to the scene. The aircraft was found in the middle of the runway after it had skidded,” he said.

He said the aircraft involved was a Charlie-type CN235 RMF 837 A belonging to the Royal Malaysian Air Force. It was carrying 24 passengers, eight from RMAF Kota Kinabalu and 16 from RMAF Labuan — along with four crew members.

“There were no injuries reported in the incident,” he added.

Alexson said airport operations had to be temporarily suspended while the aircraft was being moved to a safe location.

He added that the agencies involved in the response included the airport auxiliary police, RMAF personnel, the Airport Fire Rescue Service (AFRS), the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, Sarawak General Hospital, and other units stationed at the airport.

“We advise the public not to spread unverified or inaccurate information,” he said.
