KUCHING: Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said calling in the council’s enforcement team is always the last resort.
Speaking to Utusan Sarawak, he said under normal circumstances, the Council will first engage with individuals or businesses found to have violated any of its by-laws.
“For every issue, we will engage with the offenders, point out what they’ve done wrong, and ask them to rectify it. If they refuse and continue to break the rules, we will serve them with notices. Only if those notices are ignored will our enforcement team step in,” he explained.
Wee was responding to a complaint by a used car dealer who accused the city council of double standards in law enforcement. The dealer claimed that the council had unfairly towed away his cars and accused the enforcement officers of being selective.

The dealer also said he had offered to engage a tow truck himself, but enforcement officers proceeded to tow the vehicles anyway. The cars in question had been parked in public parking spaces in Stutong.
Wee said the council has a standard procedure it follows in all enforcement matters.
“I will look into this case to see how best we can resolve it. But people must also stop flouting the rules, as their actions affect others who are equally unhappy,” he added.
