KUCHING: The annual Mayor Walk returns for its seventh edition this August, with Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng stating that the event’s role in promoting health, unity, and a love for the outdoors among residents of all ages.
Speaking at a press conference today, Wee said the Mayor Walk has grown significantly since its inception in 2017, evolving from a modest community activity into one of Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) most anticipated events.
Held under MBKS’ Youth, Culture and Sports Programme, the Mayor Walk remains focused on fostering healthy lifestyles, encouraging public participation, and strengthening community ties.
“At MBKS, we believe a healthy community is the foundation of a thriving city. The Mayor Walk encourages people both young and old, families and friends to walk side by side in a spirit of togetherness. In doing so, we reinforce the social bonds that make Kuching South a caring, safe, and inclusive city,” he said.

He added that this year’s edition also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Wee added that the walk also reflects MBKS’ vision of transforming Kuching South into a Healthy and Smart City, where public spaces are not merely infrastructure, but platforms for interaction, wellness, and learning.
He noted the intergenerational aspect of the event, where it’s common to see three generations walking together, grandparents, parents and children sharing conversations and creating lasting memories.
“For many children, this is also a chance to experience the green heart of our city and to develop an appreciation for our local environment. Without even realising it, they’re learning about conservation, responsibility, and the benefits of outdoor living,” he said.
Wee also expressed his gratitude to long-time partners and sponsors who have supported the initiative throughout the years.
He thanked Ibraco Berhad for its continuous support since 2018, contributing RM80,000 worth of t-shirts for this year’s event. He also acknowledged 38 Yayasan Amal Cinta as a returning t-shirt sponsor, and Chagee, which has contributed RM10,000 in sponsorship and 600 free drink vouchers valued at RM10,140 since 2023.
Wee extended thanks to new sponsor Lalamove, which is contributing RM20,000 and 10,000 branded hand fans. He also thanked Premier Echo Sound and Light System Sdn Bhd for providing the sound system since 2018, and Revive for contributing 10,800 cans of drinks to keep participants hydrated.
He also reminded participants to register via the iPeople platform, as only registered participants will be eligible to redeem the Mayor Walk t-shirt. T-shirt collection will be held at the MBKS lobby on August 15 from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., and on August 16 from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon. Participants must present their iPeople registration QR code during redemption.
“Let us continue walking forward together for a healthier, greener, and more connected Kuching South,” he said.
Mayor Walk 2025 is scheduled to take place on August 17 at 6.00 a.m. at the MBKS Boulevard.
