KUCHING: The Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) will begin enforcing a strict new policy from September 1 this year to deal with commercial vehicle operators who repeatedly violate regulations.
Chairman Michael Kong said the move comes in response to persistent public complaints about operators blatantly disregarding the law, despite regular enforcement by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the police.
“As a nation governed by the rule of law, it is critical that regulations are respected. LPKP Sarawak takes these matters seriously and is committed to holding operators accountable,” he said in a statement.
Under the enhanced enforcement framework, Kong explained that penalties will be imposed in stages over a three-year rolling period. First-time offenders will receive a formal warning, while second-time offenders will be issued a show cause letter. Failure to provide reasonable justification will result in the suspension of the vehicle’s licence for three months.
He disclosed that a third offence will lead to a six-month suspension, followed by licence termination for a fourth offence. For repeated violations beyond that, all licences held by the operator will be revoked, and both the operator and its directors will be blacklisted from applying for new licences in Sarawak.
Kong said while some operators may view the new measures as harsh, public safety could not be compromised.
“The continued non-compliance by a few operators endangers road users and tarnishes the reputation of the entire industry. LPKP Sarawak must act firmly to protect the public and restore order in the sector,” he stressed.
He added that the board hoped the stricter policies would instil greater responsibility among operators and lead to a safer, more accountable transport network in Sarawak.
