Kuching MP urges thorough probe into student’s death, calls for overhaul of campus safety measures

MP Kuching, Dr Kelvin Yii calls for thorough investigation on student’s murder.

KUCHING: Kuching Member of Parliament Dr Kelvin Yii has called for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the tragic death of a female student from Kuching, who was found dead in her dormitory room in Cyberjaya in what is believed to be a case of suspected murder.

He said the incident must serve as a wake-up call to educational institutions and the authorities responsible for student welfare, stressing that the Ministry of Higher Education must take swift action to review and strengthen current safety protocols.

“This tragedy raises serious concerns about student safety, especially for those living far from home,” said Dr Yii, adding that the incident has once again highlighted long-standing issues such as broken CCTVs and poorly lit walkways that have repeatedly been raised but not addressed.

He said the horrific crime reflects the failure of the system to safeguard students and emphasised that security should never be an afterthought. Educational institutions and hostel operators must proactively ensure student accommodations are equipped with functioning CCTV, secure dorm access, emergency reporting systems, and close coordination with local police.

“The safety of students must be embedded as a core institutional responsibility. Prevention must be prioritised, and necessary improvements must be implemented without waiting for another tragedy to occur,” he said.

Dr Yii also urged that the full weight of the law be applied against those responsible and called for justice and closure for the victim’s family.

“The public deserves to know the truth, and most importantly, her family deserves justice. No family should have to endure such a devastating loss under such horrifying and suspicious circumstances,” he said.

He added that beyond seeking justice, this moment of grief must lead to real and lasting change in how student safety is handled across the country.

“May her soul rest in peace, and may her family find strength in this time of unimaginable grief,” he said.
