Kelvin Yii responds to Taman Stutong Indah residents’ ART concerns

SPECIAL Assistant, George Lam attending to residents’ woes.

KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said several immediate measures have been agreed upon following concerns raised by residents of Taman Stutong Indah regarding the ongoing construction of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) in the area.

He said his special assistant, George Lam, successfully mediated discussions between the residents, Sarawak Metro, and the contractors, resulting in a series of actions to address the issues raised.

Among the agreed measures are the installation of metal hoardings to contain dust and debris, improved traffic management, and prior notices to residents about any road closures or diversions affecting access to the neighbourhood.

“The contractors have also instructed their workers to properly dispose of construction waste and to avoid parking their vehicles directly in front of residential units to respect residents’ privacy and access,” he said.

Dr Yii added that he is seeking a dialogue session with Sarawak Metro and the project’s designer consultants to discuss the design and alignment of the ART track in a more transparent and inclusive manner.

“My office will also send an official letter to Sarawak Metro to outline the requests and to urge them to consider temporarily halting construction in the area until the dialogue takes place and the residents’ concerns are fully addressed,” he said.

He stressed the importance of acting as a bridge between the people and authorities to ensure that development is carried out responsibly.

“We recognise the value of the ART project for Kuching’s future, but we are equally committed to protecting the rights, comfort, and safety of our residents. My office will continue to follow up and mediate discussions whenever necessary, for the benefit of the people,” Dr Yii said.
