KUCHING: Laughter and curiosity filled the air as 30 children from Green Eduland Kindergarten explored City Growers Kuching’s urban farm at Jalan Batu Lintang, immersing themselves in the world of plants, soil, and farm life.

GABRIEL Hii, founder of City Growers Kuching.

The collaboration between Green Eduland and City Growers aims to promote nature based learning, encouraging children to discover and understand their surroundings through hands on experiences in nature.

During the session, the children learned the basics of sustainable food systems. They planted microgreens, observed the process of growing food from seed to harvest, and interacted with farm animals in a safe, engaging setting.

“Children are naturally curious, and nature provides the best classroom,” said Gabriel Hii, founder of City Growers Kuching.

“When they touch the soil, care for plants, and spend time with animals, they learn more and develop empathy, responsibility, and respect for life.”

The children were also introduced to microgreens, small but nutrient dense plants packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Through this activity, they discovered how even tiny crops can play a vital role in promoting healthy and sustainable eating habits.

“Understanding where food comes from helps children grow into individuals who value sustainability and health,” Gabriel added.

“Through outdoor learning, we encourage them to connect with the real world, reduce screen time, and appreciate the environment. These experiences also align with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) values that focus on caring for people, the planet, and responsible food production.”

Green Eduland principal Grace Wong said, “We want our children to realise that food doesn’t come from supermarket shelves. It comes from the soil, the sun, and the effort we put into nurturing it. Today’s activity shows that learning is alive and everywhere.”

Green Eduland’s teaching philosophy centres on nature based learning, nurturing creativity, awareness, and environmental responsibility.

This partnership with City Growers reflects their shared commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

This programme marks the beginning of a meaningful journey to cultivate curiosity and resilience among young learners, inspiring them to build a sustainable and compassionate future.
