Give priority on school safety, not a RM8.4 million Jalur Gemilang badges

KUCHING: Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol has urged the government to prioritise student safety over symbolic projects, following the Education Ministry’s recent announcement of RM8.4 million allocation for Jalur Gemilang badges and RM3 million for closed-circuit television (CCTV) installations in selected boarding schools.

“I respect the symbolic needs such as badges that form part of students’ identity. However, priority should be given to student safety and well-being, which are the foundation of a conducive learning environment,” he said in a statement today.

Mordi highlighted that issues such as bullying, external intrusions, and parental concerns require immediate attention. He stressed that CCTV installation should take precedence, especially as many schools, including those in rural areas, still lack complete security systems.

“Teachers cannot monitor every corner of the school at all times. CCTV can help reduce bullying and gangsterism, prevent intrusions, and provide evidence if unwanted incidents occur. A proper security system would not only prevent incidents but also give parents and teachers greater confidence,” he said.

He also called on the government to re-evaluate spending priorities, ensure transparency in awarding contracts, and develop a comprehensive school safety plan that includes CCTV, security fencing, patrols, and cooperation with parent communities.

“I will continue to urge the government to explain this issue openly in Parliament, because our children cannot be made victims of wrong priorities,” Mordi added.
