KUCHING: George Lam, special assistant to Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, has urged Sarawak Metro to temporarily suspend the ART construction project in Taman Stutong Indah following a site visit prompted by resident complaints.
“I observed multiple issues that require urgent attention,” Lam said after inspecting the area. The construction zone is not properly secured, with heavy machinery operating dangerously close to residential homes without adequate barriers or warning signs.”
He added that the project has caused ongoing disturbances to residents, including excessive noise, dust, and compromised privacy.

Lam also pointed to road safety concerns, noting that large construction lorries are frequently crossing the main road without proper traffic control. “At one point, there was a sudden road closure with no prior notice, creating confusion and inconvenience for road users,” he said.
Another key concern raised was the lack of proper communication. “Residents were not informed about the project timeline, alignment, or expected disruptions. There has been no official briefing or engagement,” Lam said.

He also highlighted a troubling report involving contractors allegedly requesting to use electricity from a resident’s home for construction activities. “This is highly unprofessional and completely unacceptable,” he said.
“I strongly urge Sarawak Metro to temporarily halt the construction until a mutual understanding is reached with the residents and all safety and communication issues are properly addressed,” Lam added.
