KUCHING: Special Assistant to the Member of Parliament for Kuching, George Lam, today visited several businesses along Jalan Wee Kheng Chiang at Ang Cheng Ho to assess the ongoing impact of recurring power outages in the area.
“Business owners told me that power outages have occurred three to four times just in the past month and these blackouts are not just inconvenient they are severely disrupting operations, damaging machinery, and causing financial losses,” he said.
Lam added that some businesses reported losing customer orders due to the power cuts, while others had to bear the cost of repairing equipment damaged during the blackouts.
Despite having lodged complaints with Sarawak Energy (SESCO) after each incident, the problem remains unresolved, with outages becoming more frequent.
“This is no longer an isolated incident as it has become a systemic problem. Electricity is a basic necessity for businesses, and such frequent outages are not only disruptive but infringe on the economic rights of local entrepreneurs,” Lam added.
He called on Sarawak Energy to immediately deploy technical teams to inspect and repair the infrastructure in the affected area.
“I also urge Sarawak Energy to consider providing fair compensation to the affected businesses for equipment damage and lost income. If the power supply cannot be guaranteed, the responsible party must be held accountable. Compensation is necessary to show respect for the rights and livelihoods of our local entrepreneurs.”
Lam said he will continue to monitor the situation closely and offer support to business owners seeking compensation.
