Flood solution urgently needed at Lorong Angsana 4A, says Wong King Yii

KUCHING: Wong King Yii has called on the local council and relevant authorities to prioritise resolving the flash flooding problem at Lorong Angsana 4A, which he said has troubled residents for over a decade.

“I am concerned that despite repeated complaints and inspections, the situation in Lorong Angsana 4A remains unresolved. Residents continue to face great inconvenience and distress whenever there is heavy rain,” Wong said during a recent visit to the area.

He explained that most residents are retirees, some with health challenges, who are struggling to cope with recurring floods. “Every downpour leaves them anxious about rainwater and sewage entering their homes. Some spend their own savings on pumps and barriers, but these often prove ineffective. Their daily lives should not be this difficult,” he said.

Wong noted that after flooding, residents also face the additional risk of pests such as scorpions and centipedes entering their homes. “One resident even had to rush home from work during a downpour, fearing her belongings would be damaged. This shows the level of worry and pressure they are living under,” he added.

He also pointed out that the recent drainage upgrade did not bring the desired improvement. “Because the drains were constructed at a higher level, water is flowing back towards homes. At the tail-end, there is no outlet, which makes the flooding worse. I believe this issue requires a thorough reassessment so that the upgrading project truly benefits the community,” he explained.

Wong urged the authorities to act swiftly and decisively. “The residents of Lorong Angsana 4A have been patient for many years. It is time for practical measures to be taken so that their safety and wellbeing are safeguarded. The community deserves a long-term and effective solution,” he said.
