KUCHING: During a recent walkabout in Jalan Stakan, Michael Kong Feng Nian, Special Assistant to Chong Chieng Jen, was alerted by a resident about A serious issue linked to newly completed drainage works in Jalan Stakan area has been discovered.

Special Assistant to MP Stampin, Michael Kong said while the new drainage structure has been constructed, it was not properly connected to the existing drain walls, leaving a visible and exposed gap between the old and new sections.

“This oversight has led to rapid land erosion, as rain and runoff are now washing away the exposed soil,” he said, warning that if left unresolved, the erosion could compromise the integrity of the drainage system, damage nearby infrastructure, and pose risks to residents.

Kong urged the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak to act swiftly by sealing the gap and reinforcing the affected area.

“This should not be just about completing a project as doing it right is the right thing to do,” he stressed.

He added that public infrastructure projects are too often done in isolation, without proper coordination or follow-up, leading to unnecessary complications and costly repairs.

“Government agencies must adopt a more practical and holistic approach. Every project should be implemented with long-term functionality and sustainability in mind,” he said.
