Dato Wee Hong Seng slams DAPSY for cheap publicity

KUCHING: Kuching City South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng hit back strongly at George Lam of DAP Socialist Youth Sarawak, accusing him of twisting facts and using public safety as ‘cheap political ammunition.’

“George Lam’s accusations are baseless, malicious, and a direct insult to every officer who has been working day and night. To accuse MBKS of inaction is a lie and that is plain and simple,” Wee said.

He stressed that MBKS has long been taking concrete action against illegal moneylending and gambling.

“We don’t make noise for publicity. We work on the ground with the police and enforcement agencies. Last month alone, we engaged with the Kuching District Police Chief and Bukit Aman’s Special Branch to strengthen enforcement. For years, we have compiled phone numbers from illegal loan ads and submitted them to PDRM and MCMC.

Wee stressed that these are facts which Lam conveniently chose to ignore.

Accusing Lam of playing politics at the expense of public trust, Wee said Lam didn’t bother to check. He didn’t bother to ask but just made a public reckless spectacle.

He added that enforcement powers ultimately rest with federal agencies.

“Let’s be clear: PDRM and MCMC are Federal bodies. The MPs for Kuching and Stampin are from DAP, and so is the Deputy Minister overseeing MCMC. If DAPSY really cares, go push for action in Parliament and Cabinet, instead of pointing fingers at local councils who are already doing the hard work,” he said.

Wee defended his officers against what he called deliberate attempts to belittle their service. “Thousands of illegal banners and posters have been removed under tough conditions. To smear their dedication with lies is shameful and dishonest,” he said.

He further accused DAPSY of knowing the truth but misleading the public for political mileage. “The moment DAPSY admits these are Federal enforcement issues, it proves they’ve always known the facts. Yet, they chose to mislead the people. That is irresponsible politics,” he said.

Wee urged by calling for responsibility over rhetoric. “Leadership should not be about throwing accusations for headlines. Leadership is about doing the work and owning responsibility. MBKS loves this city, and we will protect it, with or without applause. What Sarawak needs now is unity of purpose, not political noise,” he said.
