KUCHING: The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sarawak has expressed full support for the appointment of YB Chong Chieng Jen as the new DAP Parliamentary Leader.
In a statement issued today, DAPSY Sarawak Deputy Chief Senator Roderick Wong Siew Lead said the appointment of Chong, who is also DAP’s National Vice Chairman, Sarawak State Chairman, and the Member of Parliament for Stampin reflects the central leadership’s recognition of his long-standing contributions and capabilities.
“This appointment is not only a personal recognition for YB Chong, but also a strong signal that the DAP central leadership values the voices of Sarawak and acknowledges East Malaysia’s rightful role in national politics,” said Wong.
He added that the move is consistent with DAP’s long-standing vision of building a national, multicultural, and inclusive Malaysia.
Wong noted that although DAP is part of the federal ruling coalition, it continues to serve as the opposition in Sarawak. He described this “dual role” as a mark of responsibility, rather than contradiction, with the party pushing for fair reforms at the federal level while keeping the Sarawak government in check.
“As a Sarawakian, YB Chong understands the development gaps and structural inequalities faced by the people of East Malaysia. He has consistently fought for fairer resource distribution, the implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), regional autonomy, and improvements in infrastructure and education,” Wong said.
Wong also stressed that the appointment carries with it a greater responsibility for Sarawak’s representatives to speak up on the national stage.
“We must not be passive recipients of decisions made elsewhere. We must participate actively in shaping national policy and continue raising issues based on facts and principles,” he said.
DAPSY Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to support Chong in his parliamentary duties while continuing to hold the Sarawak state government accountable and serve the needs of the people.
