KUCHING: Residents along Arang Road have expressed unease over the proliferation of illegal loan advertisements on lamp posts, fences, and other public facilities in the area.
The stickers, promoting ‘fast loans’ and ‘no-collateral loans,’ have reappeared repeatedly despite removal efforts, prompting calls for more sustained action.
Soo Tien Ren, Chief of DAPSY Stampin and Chairman of DAP Arang Road Branch, noted the importance of addressing the issue promptly. He said that, while the advertisements are a visible nuisance, they also highlight underlying social challenges, including financial pressures on low-income households, limited financial literacy, and the vulnerability of certain groups to predatory lending practices.
“Effective management of these advertisements is not only about maintaining the city’s appearance but also about safeguarding residents from potential financial harm,” Soo said.
He added that authorities should consider a more comprehensive approach, combining enforcement with public education and community support initiatives.
Soo also encouraged local representatives, including Batu Kitang State Assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, to engage actively in ensuring that mechanisms are in place to prevent the recurrence of such issues and to provide support to residents most at risk. Residents have echoed the call for systematic measures that balance urban management with social protection.
