A father’s perseverance rewarded as son finally gains Malaysian citizenship

KUCHING: After years of struggle, a father’s unwavering love and determination have finally paid off when his son was officially recognised as a Malaysian citizen.

Special Assistant to MP Stampin, Michael Kong said in 2004, Mr. Go from Kuching became the proud father of a baby boy with his Indonesian partner.

However, his life took a difficult turn when the mother returned to Indonesia shortly after, leaving Mr. Go to raise their son on his own.

Despite the challenges of being a single parent, Mr. Go took full responsibility for his son’s upbringing, providing him with love, care, and education.

Determined to secure his son’s rightful place in Malaysia, he went through the necessary legal procedures, including a DNA test to confirm his paternity and have his name registered on the child’s birth certificate.

Kong said Mr Go then applied for Malaysian citizenship for his son, but the Home Ministry rejected the application despite clear proof of paternity.

Towards the end of 2023, Mr. Go turned to DAP Stampin for assistance where they prepared the appeal and submitted all relevant documentation while following up closely with the authorities.

Kong added that the team was deeply moved by Mr. Go’s perseverance and commitment to his son.

“Mr. Go’s story is a touching reminder that behind every citizenship application lies a human story of love, sacrifice, and perseverance. He never gave up on his son, and today, his determination has been rewarded,” said Kong.

In July 2025, Mr Go’s son Malaysian citizenship was approved.

“We had the honour of accompanying them to collect his first Malaysian identity card. It was a moment filled with relief, joy, hope and the end of one long struggle and the beginning of a new chapter,” Kong said.

He said DAP Stampin would continue to assist families facing similar struggles, stressing that nation-building begins with recognising and uplifting those who call Malaysia home.
