KUCHING: Special Assistant to MP Stampin, Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong, expressed deep concern over the prolonged inaction by the authorities in addressing a drainage issue at a residence along Jalan Kangkok.
“In March 2023, I personally visited Mr Chai’s home to assess the flooding problem caused by a blocked drain behind his house. Every time it rains for just an hour, water begins to flood his home. Mr Chai had no choice but to install his own pump system to divert the water to the roadside drain, he said”
Kong also noted the deteriorating condition of the front drain during that visit.
“According to Mr Chai, he said contractors from the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) had inspected the site more than a year ago and assured him that a new drain would be built. But up till now, no work has begun,” he said.
Following the visit, Kong stated that a formal complaint was lodged with MPP, urging swift remedial action. While officers returned to the site to take photos and measurements, no further steps were taken.
“During my most recent visit, I observed that the drain has worsened and now poses a safety risk to residents,” he added. “This lack of action is completely unacceptable. Local councils like MPP must act swiftly when it comes to basic infrastructure and public safety. Delays only make the situation worse and costlier.”
Kong hoped that the Local council and ministry will address something as basic as proper drainage as the excuse of ‘no funding’ simply doesn’t hold water. This contradiction shows their priorities are misplaced.
He urged both the Ministry and MPP to shift focus back to the people’s real needs. “No grand infrastructure project can replace the fundamental responsibility of ensuring public safety and well-being,” he said.
