Dato Sri Wahab contributes RM100,000 to help build new temple in Matu
KUCHING: Former Igan Member of Parliament, Dato Sri Wahab Dolah, has contributed RM100,000 to the Multipurpose Hall of the Matu Hock Cheok Teng Temple.
The contribution is meant to cover part of the cost of constructing a new temple made of concrete to replace the old wooden temple, which is more than 50 years old.
The temple’s chairman, Ngo Tieng Giap, said the construction cost of the new temple is estimated at RM600,000.
“Besides the RM100,000 from Dato Sri, we have so far received RM200,000 from UNIFOR (Unit for Other Religions) and RM100,000 in donations from local residents.
“This means the total amount collected so far is RM400,000. We still need RM200,000,” he told Utusan Sarawak.
He said the target is to begin construction of the new temple building in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration in mid-February 2026.
He added that the new building will be two storeys, with the ground floor designated for the hall, kitchen, and store room, while the upper floor will be used for offices.
Lower ground floor, the construction will be made higher ‘leg’ for parking space.
The site is located at Pasar Lama in Matu, and the new building is expected to be completed within one year.
“On behalf of the Chinese community in Matu District, we express our deepest gratitude to Dato Sri Wahab, who has consistently supported the Matu Chinese community all this while,” he said.
