KUCHING: Kota Sentosa Assemblyman Yap Yau Sin today praised the Sarawak GPS Government for its visionary and disciplined leadership, noting that Sarawak’s pioneering policies are now shaping political agendas beyond its borders, especially in Sabah, where both PKR Sabah and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) have proposed the creation of a sovereign wealth fund as part of their state election manifestos.
Yap said this clearly demonstrates that Sarawak, under GPS, is leading the nation in long-term financial planning, with other political coalitions recognising the strength of Sarawak’s model and trying to replicate it.
Sarawak introduced our Sovereign Wealth Future Fund in 2022, backed by a strong Ordinance, governance safeguards, and strict investment rules. Today, both PKR Sabah and GRS Sabah are campaigning on similar proposals. This proves that GPS is not only ahead but GPS is setting the standard for Malaysia.
He also emphasised that GPS implemented its sovereign wealth fund not as an election promise, but as a long-term strategic initiative with clear benefits for future generations.
While parties in Sabah announce these ideas during elections, Sarawak already has a functioning fund with transparent structures and professional oversight. This is the difference between political rhetoric and responsible governance.
Yap highlighted that Sarawak’s fiscal strength comes from its insistence on prudent financial management, something Premier Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has repeatedly championed.
Our Premier has made it very clear, “Sarawak will not follow the federal government’s dangerous debt trajectory. We will not gamble with our children’s future. Sarawak believes in discipline, savings, and long-term planning, not unsustainable borrowing”.
He said the fact that both major coalitions in Sabah, PKR Sabah and GRS are adopting Sarawak-styled policies shows that GPS’ governance approach has become a benchmark for stability, credibility, and foresight.
When two competing Sabah coalitions are both borrowing ideas from Sarawak, it is undeniable proof that GPS governance works. Sarawak is no longer just participating in national progress, GPS Sarawak are leading it.
Yap reaffirmed his confidence that GPS will continue to drive policies that secure Sarawak’s financial resilience, economic autonomy, and intergenerational prosperity.
As other states scramble to catch up, Sarawak continues moving forward with clarity, stability, and purpose. GPS delivers results and now the rest of the country is following our lead.
