
KUCHING: The Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD Kuching) has recorded a 25.44 percent drop in the overall crime index between January and September 2025, compared to the same period last year.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said a total of 548 cases were reported this year, down from 735 cases in 2024 that is a reduction of 187 cases.
“Violent crime showed a slight decrease of 1.43 percent, with 69 cases compared to 70 cases last year. Property crime recorded a more significant drop of 27.97 percent, from 665 cases in 2024 to 479 cases this year,” he said during the monthly police assembly.
Among the notable reductions were motorcycle thefts, which dropped by 18.3 percent (229 cases in 2024 to 187 cases this year), and gang robberies without firearms, which fell by 9.67 percent (31 cases in 2024 to 28 cases in 2025).
On narcotics cases, Alexson said police opened 1,507 investigation papers and arrested 1,583 individuals between January and August this year, compared to 1,468 investigation papers and 1,517 arrests during the same period last year.

However, he noted that commercial crime saw a rise of 53.3 percent, with 483 cases recorded this year compared to 315 in 2024. Despite this, estimated financial losses declined by RM5.7 million, or 20.46 percent.
Road accidents also recorded a decrease of 1.5 percent, with 3,957 cases from January to August 2025, compared to 4,019 in the same period last year. However, fatal accidents rose slightly from 17 to 19 cases, while cases involving serious injuries increased from 6 to 15, and minor injuries from 5 to 13.
“For traffic enforcement, police issued 37,113 summonses this year, an increase of 13.8 percent compared to 32,620 last year. A total of 26 individuals were arrested for reckless or dangerous driving, while 10 were detained for driving under the influence of alcohol,” Alexson added.
He commended the commitment and dedication of officers in IPD Kuching, urging them to maintain discipline and integrity while enhancing crime prevention efforts.
